Working on an 04 cr250 that was pulling engine oil into the crankcase and causing sludge to be released out of the muffler, I did learn when installing the new seal into the case it is critical that the depth is set to 1mm below the surface and always replace the inner sleeve. on 04 model you do have to remove the clutch basket to get to the primary drive gear. just a quick tip, after the fluids are drained take the time to remove the water pump housing, remove the impeller and replace those seals also, not only does it make it easier to remove the side case it will prevent you from taking back apart. i replaced the crank seal and collar, and the water pump seals and sealing washers.
