I had snapped off the head from the ratchet assembly and the shifter lever subsequently scraped on the ground. If ever you need to remove the primary cover MAKE SURE YOU DRAIN THE OIL FIRST! Super glad I did or I would've made a ridiculous mess. Next, remove the trim cover from the primary, then the smaller cover underneath that (this one was a pain... 3mm allen head that kept stripping my tools!). Disengage the clutch cable from the clutch pinion then remove the doghead screw that retains the pinion. Remove the pinion, then you're free to unscrew the primary cover. Carefully pry the primary cover off (bear in mind the stator magnet toward the front of the bike will resist strongly!) and make sure to completely remove the old gasket (yep, it's gonna come off in pieces). You can now easily access the ratchet assembly. Once removed, make a note of the shifter spring position. Install the new ratchet assembly and begin reassembly, using the primary cover screws to hold the new gasket in place. If you're like me and need to also replace the shifter lever it's a pretty straightforward process. Finally, add oil, start her up, and take her for a test spin!
